Ways to Contribute to Academic Choice

We are excited about building on our successes and accomplishments to make this the best year ever for Academic Choice. In order for this to happen, we need the support of all of our parents and guardians.

Volunteer your time

Get involved in Academic Choice by contributing your time to help with AC community events, fundraising, student support, or special projects. Even a few hours will make a big difference! Click here for a list of our volunteer needs for the current school year. To learn more about how you can help, please contact AC parent coordinator Kim Zvik.

Make a financial contribution

We are grateful to the many AC families who have made financial contributions to AC already this academic year!

We invite your family to contribute! A gift of any size is appreciated. It is easier than ever to make a contribution to Academic Choice:

1) Go to the website for the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG):  http://www.bhsdg.org/donors.html  and click on the donate button under the PayPal logo.  Be sure to write "Academic Choice" in the designation field so that BHSDG will direct your contribution to the AC program.

2) Mail a check (payable to BHS Development Group) to: Academic Choice, c/o Lawrence Grown, METRO Lighting & Crafts, 2121 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94702.

AC parents provide an important source of funding for teachers and students to be able to do many of the things that district funding will not cover. For example, last year AC spent $15,000 (matched by an anonymous corporate donor) to purchase a mobile computer lab so that our students have laptops in Academic Choice classrooms for online research and writing papers. This computer system will be coordinated by AC history teacher (and tech guru) Ben Sanoff.

Other projects supported by AC parent contributions over the past 12 months include:

  • Implementing a new reading diagnostic assessment for all AC freshmen that provided crucial data for teachers to use in creating individually-designed reading plans for students.
  • Providing classroom teaching supplies and support material for AC teachers.
  • Continuing improvement of AC Advanced Placement courses, including the creation of a new pre-AP curriculum that will prepare all underclassmen for the rigors of AP.
  • Hosting AC’s very popular “What’s Up With College?” night as well as other social and outreach events throughout the year.
